The Common Gateway Interface, or CGI, is an interface for running external programs on a web server.

What is it used for?
CGI scripts are programs which handle information requests and return the appropriate document or generate a document on the fly. An easy example of a cgi-script would be a form which is emailed to the client in a readable format.

  Java, PHP, Javascript

Java and PHP are another programming languages, but they have many features that allow them to run on networks. Since the Internet has grown to be so popular over the last couple of years, so too have Java and PHP.
The dynamism and interactivity is achieved by including links within an HTML page to Java programs called applets. When the link is clicked on, the Java applet is transferred to your computer and executed locally by the browser.

  Database Integration
A database can be simply defined as a collection of items of information organized for convenient access. Computer programs were developed to help manage databases. Database Management Systems are used for storing, utilizing and manipulating large amounts of information. The information can be pulled together in various formats to present such things as shopping carts, demographics, or inventory.
